The following is a condensed list of internal model validation rules for the Air Loop, Water Loops and Zone HVAC Groups that is an excerpt from a larger mapping matrix that looks at different rules and conditions of those rules as they are tested against Class, Type and Sub Type.
Note: Some of the rules listed below will overlap with the validation checks outlined on validation framework. A comprehensive set is a combination of the different areas described in the table within that section.
Air Loop must have a supply and demand sub-loop
Air Loop must have a control strategy
Test for Dual Duct System
Test for Triple Duct, 3 branches from supply side to demand side
Identify Splitter as component with one inlet and more than one outlet
Identify Mixer as component with one air outlet and more than one air inlet
Only one splitter and mixer per half loop
Only one splitter per supply side and demand side of loop
Must have at least one fan in Air Loop-Supply
Supply Side Loop may contain an Outdoor air sub-system
Quadruple duct or greater is not permitted
Air system must contain a branch
Air loops must contain zone splitter or supply plenum
All components are allowable entries in the Air Loop Supply Side
All components are allowable entries in the Air Loop Outdoor Air System
Outdoor air system must be connected to the Outdoor Air Zone
Outdoor air requires an outdoor air object is connected to supply and relief air streams
Outdoor air requires an outdoor air object is connected to supply and relief air streams
Component is part of list of permitted heat recovery devices
Allowable components in the Supply Side Supply Path
Allowable components in the Supply Side Return Path
All allowable entries in the Air Loop Zone Supply Path
Can only have one air terminal per zone
Zone equipment sub-system must have at least one zone object
In the direction of flow Zone must follow an air terminal
All allowable entries in the Air Loop Zone Equipment
Air loops must contain a zone
Maximum one ZoneMixer per supply side or demand side, allow for plena
All allowable entries in the Air Loop Zone Return Path
Air loops must contain zone mixer or return plenum.
The demand side of a dual duct air system must contain a splitter or a supply plenum
The demand side of a dual duct air system must contain a mixer or a return plenum
The supply side of a dual duct system must contain a splitter
The supply side of a dual duct system must not contain a mixer
Dual Duct systems must contain dual duct air terminal boxes
At least one pump or headered pump per circuit
Identify Splitter as component with one inlet and more than one outlet
Identify Mixer as component with one water outlet and more than one water inlet
Identify Common Pipe and Primary & Secondary Loops
Pumps can be in series but not in parallel branches
Minimum pieces for supply side of loop are a pipe or pump, splitter, chiller, boiler, pipe (or other object that adds energy to loop), mixer, pipe or thermal storage (including ice storage) or boiler or chiller.
On supply side of plant loop, if a using branch pumps, cannot have a bypass but if using variable speed pumps, may have a bypass.
On supply side of plant loop, if a using branch pumps, cannot have a bypass.
On supply side of loop, if using a main loop pump, must have bypass if pump is constant speed.
On supply side of loop, if using a main loop pump, may have bypass if pump is variable speed
Pump must be first on branch on supply side of plant loop or else a pipe can be the first item followed by a splitter and then the pumps must be first item on each branch.
All allowable entries in the Plant Loop Demand Side
At least one pump or headered pump per circuit
Minimum pieces for the demand side of a plant loop with primary-only are pipe, splitter, coil (or something else that places a demand on the loop), mixer and pipe.
On demand side of plant loop, must have bypass if constant flow and may have bypass if variable flow.
On demand side of a plant loop, a component can be by itself on inlet, outlet or parallel branch.
Plant supply side equipment can be mixed (chillers, etc..)

Pumps can be in series but not in parallel branches
All allowable entries in the Plant Loop Demand Side

All allowable entries in the Condenser Loop Demand Side
Air loop control must have a setpoint manager scheme
An outlet cannot connect to an inlet on the same component
All Fans must have an associated control Scheme
Air terminal must follow zone splitter or supply plenum (I don't like the wording of this rule)
